Caroma
An innovative toilet manufacturer from Australia
Caroma, an Australian company founded by Charles Rothauser in 1941, is the world’s leading manufacturer of dual-flush toilets. This innovation has been proven to be more effective than even the most efficient low-flow toilet to reduce the annual amount of water people use when going to the bathroom. This technological advancement arose out of Australia’s need to conserve water during the country’s constant and ongoing drought cycles.
The reason for Caroma’s success has been the company’s constant investment in research and development. The company developed its two-button flush technology more than 20 years ago, and since 1993 it has offered a 6/3 litre (1.6/0.8 gallon) dual flush cistern that the company claims offers “water-saving benefits on a scale previously unavailable anywhere in the world.”
Of course, water conservation is all well and good, but how is a Caroma toilet going to look in the bathroom? Thankfully, the company product selection meets or rivals that of its competitors. Toilets come in both elongated and standard models with a variety of styles to suit the bathroom. The main model names are Caravelle, Royale, Reflections and Tasman. Specifications vary from model to model, but some features to watch for include:
- Two-button flush system.
- Smooth, easy-to-clean bowls.
- Vandal-resistant conversion kits, for toilets used in commercial or industrial areas.
- A four-inch trap way to significantly reduce clogging.
- Colors that include white and “biscuit”.
Caroma also offers a range of wall-hung toilets, as well as bidets for those with limited mobility.
Of course, the biggest question most American consumers have about Caroma is “Well, the Aussies have access to this dual-flush technology, but is it available here in the States?” The answer is an emphatic yes. Caroma USA has literally hundreds of distributors throughout North America that can sell you a dual-flush toilet. The list is available on the company’s website.
You may find that the price is a bit higher than what you’d pay for a more standard North American toilet, but keep in mind that Caroma customers, in independent testimonials, have claimed to see a huge reduction in their water usage after installing a dual-flush toilet--as much as 60% within the first month.
Clearly, these toilets are good for the pocket book as well as the environment.
